Department Division of Technology Services
Job Description Summary

Wentworth Institute of Technology (WIT) seeks an experienced, collaborative technology leader committed to innovation to be its Vice President of Technology Services and Chief Information Officer (CIO). Reporting to the President and as a member of the President’s Administrative Council, the CIO will provide leadership for the Division of Technology Services (DTS) and oversee an annual operating budget of $4.2 million, the technology capital budget, and a staff of more than 45 employees and contractors. In collaboration with the WIT community, the CIO will lead the development of IT strategies that enable institutional goals and priorities. The CIO identifies and implements WIT’s total technology needs, advises the senior leadership on significant IT investments, and designs appropriate policies to manage technology and information security risk.
Wentworth Institute of Technology is an independent, master’s level nationally ranked university offering career focused education in engineering, technology, design, and management. Founded in 1904, Wentworth has come to be well recognized for preparing students for career success through their collaborative, project-based, and interdisciplinary approach to applied technology learning. Located in Boston, Wentworth provides all the benefits of a student-focused small-college-environment, surrounded by everything that an academically and culturally vibrant city has to offer.

Enrolling close to 4,100 students from across the country and around the globe, Wentworth offers over 20 higher educational programs (undergraduate, graduate, certificate and professional), employs over 550 faculty and staff, and has an operating budget and endowment of $120M and $86M, respectively. The Institute’s three-part experiential learning model, which combines classroom learning with project-based/laboratory/studio experience, and industry co-op placements, truly distinguishes Wentworth and contributed significantly to the impressive 2015 placement rate of 98% within 6 months of graduation.

Application and enrollment numbers have seen considerable increases over the last five years, as has the academic preparedness of the school’s incoming students – two sure signs that the value of a Wentworth education is becoming more and more widely recognized.

Over the past five years, WIT has made improvements in the delivery of DTS services and technology solutions. Specifically, the Institute has established a more capable foundational infrastructure, improved IT support services, reduced vulnerabilities to the disruption of technology outages, and active academic technology program. Further, DTS has improved its management processes and enhanced staff capabilities. Working in collaboration with the President’s Administrative Council (PAC), the key leadership opportunities for the next CIO include the following areas:

• Develop an institutional IT roadmap and the long-term technology requirements to support analytics and data driven decisions.
• Assess the current delivery model of technology and information services across the Institute and implement additional measures to improve service quality and increase the ability to execute IT projects.
• In partnership with the Division of Enrollment Management deploy solutions to improve student services and improve support for reporting and analytics.
• Review and refresh the planning efforts for the upgrade to Banner 9 and clarify roles and responsibilities, timelines, scope, and approach.
• Working with Enrollment Management and Academic Affairs sponsor a collaborative review of student CRM requirements.
• Develop strategy to support expanding adoption of learning technologies and use of specialized technology learning spaces for both on-campus and online programs.
• Improve IT governance processes to secure engaged input and support from senior academic and administrative leaders, and student advisors in an annual set of IT project priorities.
• Develop technology strategies in partnership with Institutional Advancement to support efforts to enhance constituent outreach and support increased fundraising activity.
• In partnership with PAC establish a long-range planning process that continues to position the Institute for the future and is in alignment with organizational readiness and capacity for change.
