Job Description Summary

Academic Technicians supports students and faculty (in the Industrial Design Program) with technical advice and instruction in fabricating models in wood, metal and plastic. Technicians oversee everyday operation of the Industrial Design model shops and provide all necessary, day, evening and weekend operations. Technicians are the safety resource and contact point in each lab and studio area. Handles all basic safety communication, duties and responsibilities in the labs and studios. Includes small chemical or hazardous substance spills. Monitoring P.P.E’s for use by students and safety equipment affixed in the shops. Reports repairs needed to supervisor who expedites these when needed thru the Physical Plant work order system. Safety issues will be reported to the supervisor and/or the COF safety officer.

Essential Function

Supervises and demonstrates to students the proper use of shop and studio equipment. Advises, guides, and helps students to put together complex projects involving a multitude of materials and processes. Inspects work areas and equipment to ensure compliance with Wentworth safety policies, guidelines, procedures, and programs. Includes documenting safety inspections, citing dangerous areas/procedures and recommending corrective procedures.

Essential Function Department and ad-hoc meetings with faculty, staff, or physical plant. Communicates with student and faculty to better facilitate shop and studio practices.

Essential Function

Responds to incidental spills of hazardous materials, to the level of training received. Utilizes prepared inspection forms. Conducts surveys and inspections of such items as personal protective equipment (PPE’s), facility hazards, life safety, etc. Conducts flow testing of eye washes. Cleans shop areas. Specifically, dust stored in collection systems.
