Job Description Summary

The Academic Department Head is the chief academic and administrative officer of the department providing both leadership and management in support of the department’s students, faculty, and staff. The department head’s appointment is recommended by the Provost, approved by the President, and serves at the discretion of the Provost.

Fiscal Responsibility: Describe the type and scope of fiscal responsibility.

Authorize purchase of equipment supplies and maintenance services, travel lodging, other routine office management necessities

Leadership and Teambuilding – Responsible for fostering an esprit de corps among faculty, staff, and students; providing a vision for the department; role model, and campus leadership. Leading departmental strategic planning efforts.

Department administration – Responsible for implementation of the department and Institute strategic goals; budget preparation and oversight; course and faculty scheduling; effective communications; and related administrative tasks; academic policies, and procedures for students, faculty, and staff.

Course/program assessment – Responsible to maintain ongoing program/course assessment and improvement; lead new program development, and maintain program accreditation. Oversee the development of new courses and service learning initiatives. Work with faculty to maintain relationshipswith external groups including alumni and professional advisory boards.

Personnel Recruitment and Development – Responsible for faculty recruitment, mentoring, and evaluation. Staff recruitment, development and evaluation. Evaluate rank change proposals; grant proposals; travel proposals; and requests for sabbatical leave.

Student engagement and recruitment – Responsible to facilitate program enhancements. Examples include: clubs, lecture series, domestic and international travel opportunities for students. Work with Admissions Office on recruitment events including Open Houses; student visits; field inquiries from prospective student and parents; visit/interact with high schools/community colleges; and facilitate atriculation agreements with domestic and international partners.
